I have said it a million times, I tend not to follow trends because 1. They are not always in my style and that is more important. 2. I hate spending money on something that isn’t going to be in my closet for years. Finally 3. Since they won’t be sticking around they are a significant hit to the environment.
Tie Dye though as always been in my wheelhouse and I was so so happy when it came back in style. Tie Dye is actually an ancient art which has phased in and out of popularity so I was OK getting on this band wagon.
Tie Dye is also such a great way to bring new life to that shirt, dress or pants that you have a stain on, or has lost its colour or shape. For this project I used an old old old Joe Fresh tank (I no longer shop there) I have had in my drawer that I had relegated to pyjamas because it was a little out of shape and yellowed.
To get started I actually bought this kit from the Dollar Store for $4 but you could easily just buy Rit Dye as well. This kit was actually great though it came with remeasured dye in bottles, gloves and elastics.
I wanted to just do an easy crumpled pattern but the back had instructions on how to do the different patterns. I first dampened my shirt as the instructions but I have done this from dry as well.
I started by gathering my shirt up into a long log and then added elastics every couple of inches. When I do it again I would probably make them even tighter but I was trying to achieve a subtle look.
I then added the dye and made sure that I had saturated the entire shirt, remember to flip it over! I then flipped the bag I was dyeing on inside out around the shirt and let it sit for 6 hours you could leave it for 8 or overnight.
Once it had sat for the desired time, I snipped off the elastics and gave it a rinse until the water ran clean and let it air dry. I did after hang it in my shower and rinsed longer because I wanted a softer pink but I forgot to take pictures.
The last step is to wash it with a little bit of soap and dry. Now you can rock your tie dye!
